The Peace Lines are a series of separation barriers ranging in length from a few hundred yards to over three miles (5 km), separating Catholic and Protestant neighbourhoods in Belfast, Derry and elsewhere in Northern Ireland. The stated purpose of the barriers is to minimize intercommunal sectarian violence between Protestants and Catholics.

The barriers themselves consist of iron, brick, and steel walls up to 25 feet (7.6 m) high, topped with metal netting. Some have gates in them occasionally manned by police, which allow passage by day, and which are closed at night

The first barriers were constructed in the early 1970s, following the outbreak of "The Troubles". Originally few in number, they have multiplied over the years, from 18 in the early 1990s to 40 today; in total they stretch over 13 miles (21 km). Most are located in Belfast.

Belfast’s partitions have outlived the Berlin Wall. While the Berlin Wall came down after 28 years, Belfast’s continue to stand, and there is little likelihood, at present, of them being demolished.

wow I never knew walls like that existed in Belfast, Ive heard a little about the troubles between the two though. I think its crazy.. To me it is just sad to think that walls like that have to be built to try and curb the voilence. I suppose for generations all these people have done is fought with each other and its just what they know,, but what about a change??? They need to learn to think a different way, life is just too short.

Political & religious shit .
Best advise farkkk off & leave em to it ,In australia we really dont give a shit what religion you are or who you vote for as long as you can make the bbq sunday after church in the arvo if you go & ya throw your ballot in the box so you dont cop a fine were happy.

The lines were devised by an immature mind & whilst immature minds remain in power so will the lines.

First off i thought it maybe some kind of line that has been set inplace to defuse a situation.
Not so far off the mark really.

dunno something to do with a line of coke and the phrase *peace MAAANNN* ??

ok in seriousness.. I hadn't heard of them.. but probably no different in purpose than walls and barriers that have been built in many countries over many thousands of years to keep out enemies or to maintain peace within villages or delineate boundaries or whatever

Hello sweetcheeks..I grew up in North Belfast during the troubles..I know more about than you...Next question..

By they way isten to the Phil Coulter song 'he town I loved so well' it was about Derry...and there is a line that says...and the barbed wire gets higher and higher...since the signing of the GFA, now over 10 years there are somewhere in the region of 40 peace lines carving up Belfast...at the time of the first PIRA ceasr fire 1994 there was 17..

Being one who sufferred at the hands of the "peaceniks" during and after the Vietnam war, I have little tolerance for theose who claim to espouse the aim of stopping a war or warlike situation. So often they target and damage the wrong people. There are thousands of Vietnam vets both here and in the US who would be in much better condition if we had not had to endure the betrayal and scorn of our countrymen. Hanoi Jane Fonda is one of the most famous examples. I am sure her motives were honourable, but her methods cost veterans and generated a hate for her that persists today.

hey Dick, how ya goin'
as my ol' sparrin' partner kizzy said, these are ozzie and kiwi forums but we welcome our friends from overseas to express their views and humour. so don't be tellin' me to KEEP OUT pal, the comment i made referred to a commercial that runs on AUSTRALIAN television and the AUSTRALIAN users of this AUSTRALIAN and NEW ZEALAND forum would see the pun. i find it very interesting that my dear friend, eco, a fellow motorcycling enthusiast, and irish national i believe, took no offence to my remarks although i would guess she probably is unaware of the true impact, as i referred earlier, to this australianism. similarly some users of this forum will understand what i mean, via previous posts of mine, when i say i would like to revert to my previous interest of utilising sporting goods when dealing with you. another indirect but nonetheless pertinant connection to the whole motorcycle enthusiast theme.

similarly although i have no first hand experience with the circumstances my ol' mate bubbles refers to, i can see where he's coming from even with the limited knowledge i have of that conflict

so you see forums host a plethora of views and opinions and not one is any less valuiable than another whether it be for serious debate on the topic , or lighthearted non malicious banter

oh if that's too confusing for you, as i am capable of verbal enthusiasm from time to time, i'm really telling you to fark off ok?

if this still leaves some doubt as to my interpretation of your arrogance, please feel free to "go blow it out your ass"

In my memory I will always see
the town that I have loved so well
where our school played ball by the gas yard wall
and we laughed through the smoke and the smell
Going home in the rain, running up the dark lane,
past ther gaol (jail) and down behind the fountain,
those were happy days in so many, many ways
in the town I loved so well.

2:
In the early morning, the shirt factory horn
callde women from Creggan, the moor and the bog
while their men on the dole played a mother's role
fed the children and then trained the dogs.
And when times got tough, there was just about enough
but they saw it through without complaining
for deep inside was a burning pride
in the town I loved so well

3:
There was music there in the Derry air
like a language that we all could understand
I remember the day when I earned my first pay
when I played in a smallpick-up band
there I spent my youth and to tell you the truth
I was sad to leave it all behind me
for I learned about life and I found a wife
in the town I loved so well

4:
But when I returned how my eyes have burned
to see how a town could be brought to its knees
by the armoured cars and the bombed out bars
and the gas that hangs on to every breeze
Now the army's installed by the old gas yard wall
and the damded barbed wire gets higher and higher
with their tanks and their guns oh my God what have they done
to the town I loved so well

5:
Now the music's gone but they carry on
for their spirit's been bruised, never broken
they will not forget but their hearts are set
on tomorrow and peace once again.
For what's done is done and what's won is won
and what's lost is lost and gone forever
I can only pray for a bright, brand new day
in the town I loved so well

Its a sad fact war ruins everything ...even memories

Last night/early morning, i recieved a few mails from your friend bubbles that where very constructive and he permitted me to use his postings else where..The guy 'bubbles' was in Nam I think that make hime very qualified on talking about..more than most..I don't know if you have any experience of the subject matter and like I said if you dont have anything intelligent to say on the subject matter..dont show your ignorance by opening your mouth before you take your brain out of first....first

I think in my humble opinion, the term arrogance should be applied in equal measures to both eco, for saying I know nothing about the thread (I was there when it happened, so I think I ought to know), and yourself for not reading the all the posts correctly..And you never seen any of the private mail/flowers that I recieved in my mail-box(from down under and they where all constructive) this morning when I woke up...So why don't you blow gas from your ass instead of talking shit...

please feel free to check out my profile/ threads/posting on CS.....

so you pretty much started the thread so that when someone (coincidentally male) made a light hearted remark, regarding the topic, that you don't/won't see the actual meaning of, so you could disect the replies and degrade the respondant? which is what i'd predicted after your retort on my reference to the advertisement as stated, and consequently we enter a slinging match of non-sensical jibber. touche` well done job completed............. i'm boredyawn
